What is the benefit of an offshore Accountant?

What accounting qualifications do South African Accountants have - and how do they compare internationally?

South Africa has a well-established and globally respected accounting qualification system, with several recognised pathways. The most well-known is CA(SA) (Chartered Accountant), awarded by SAICA. This is broadly comparable to chartered accountant qualifications in the UK (ACA/ACCA) and is widely recognised internationally. Many CA(SA)s go on to work in global finance roles, including in the UK and US. There are also other common qualifications, including:

  • ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) - an international qualification frequently held by South African Accountants and directly recognised in the UK and globally.
  • CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) - focused on management accounting, with strong relevance for commercial and strategic finance roles.
  • SAIPA (Professional Accountant) - typically more aligned to bookkeeping and general accounting, often supporting SMEs.
Will candidates be familiar with UK or US tax systems?

Some will be - but we don’t recommend making this a strict requirement. While there are differences in specific tax systems and regulations between countries, the underlying accounting principles are highly transferable. Strong Accountants can quickly adapt to UK or US requirements with minimal training. Prioritising core capability and qualification level over direct experience in a specific jurisdiction typically leads to better hires.

Can we hire someone with experience using specific accounting software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks)?

Of course - but we encourage clients to keep an open mind. While we have a strong pool of candidates highly proficient in popular accounting software, we prioritise underlying capability over tool-specific knowledge. Strong finance professionals can transition between systems quickly, and requiring a specific tool often limits access to better candidates.
